Pursuing higher degrees and participating in continuing education help us enhance our knowledge and skills and grow in our nursing practice. It’s vital to us and our patients that we continue to do both. How else can we truly say we’re able to render quality, safe care to our patients and their families or that we’re growing as professionals? When I was a staff nurse it was an honor to have our facility administrative team recognize us in special and meaningful ways during National Nurses Week, and later as a nurse administrator it was a privilege to do the same for my staff. Whatever role you’re in, take time this year to celebrate and appreciate the true meaning of National Nurses Week. Think of the memories you’ll be making!

How important is continuing education? It’s simple from a patient’s perspective. Who would you like to take care of you: a nurse who continually strives to update his or her clinical education, or one who hasn’t read a journal since school? For me, celebrating National Nurses Week is different from year to year. Usually during this special week, I have a speaking engagement somewhere — which means I get to go to a party every year. How great is that?
