APNs transform care Celebrate nursing and its history of changing the face of healthcare

N
ursing has been a force for change from the earliest days of the pro- fession. All the way back to the work done by Florence Nightingale, there has been a move within nursing to continually improve, change
and reform healthcare. Evolving, growing and developing are some of the words used along the
way to describe the changing role of nursing in healthcare, but there’s another important word — one we’ve heard frequently in recent years in the healthcare literature — that clearly defi nes what the profession has been doing in regard to change. And that word is “transforming.” With each passing year, the impact nurses have on healthcare has become more transformative and more crucial to the delivery of quality patient care and outcomes. Nurses have always understood the role they need to play in eff ecting change.
They know the education and training it calls for; the skill sets that have to be developed; the credentials they must earn; and the prominent voice they should have in decision-making, planning, strategizing and reforming health- care. And nowhere within the profession have the changes nurses eff ected been more evident than in advanced practice nursing and the transformative care APNs deliver.
