Rewarding Safe Practices

AFS recognizes the importance of keeping our industry’s personnel safe and awards companies with superb records of safety each year. This year, 11 member metalcasting facilities qualifi ed for our annual Millionaires Safety Award for achieving a million man-hours or more worked without incurring a lost-time injury or illness during the year. Ten member companies were awarded the Safe Year Award for achieving 365 days without a lost-time accident.

In the fall of 2015, AFS held a two-day workshop on implementing measures to meet the OSHA NFPA 70E electrical hazard standard.

In addition, new safety publications were released from AFS this year, including “Preparing for an EPA- OSHA Inspection,” “PPE Guide for Metalcasting Operations (revised),” and Spent Foundry Sand Safety Data Sheet.

Promoting Metalcasting

as a Career • AFS launched Melting Point magazine and website for students in grades 3-12. This resource contains information about the industry for teachers and students, as well as tips for the industry to reach out to future metalcasters. The print magazine is

published twice per year and distributed locally for Manufacturing Day in October and each spring at Metalcasting Congress or CastExpo. Chapters and Corporate Members may contact AFS for copies to share when they visit or host students.

• The Future Leaders of Metalcasting group continues to support and strengthen the network of metalcasting’s next generation of leadership through outreach and professional development.

• The Women in Metalcasting group continues to foster relationships and held a breakfast and speaker at CastExpo.

• The online Metalcasting Career Center provides a dedicated job board to connect employers and jobseekers within the industry.

• Hundreds of students participated in metalcasting demonstrations coordinated by AFS staff members and chapter volunteers in schools and other organization events.

• AFS partners with the Foundry Education Foundation (FEF) to support its efforts for fostering metalcasting career education and advancement

End-User Outreach

• Metal Casting Design & Purchasing provided editorial insight to 23,000 buyers and designers of castings.

• AFS collaborated with the Society of Mechanical Engineers (SME) to organize and conduct a casting workshop and casting design seminar at SME Rapid.

• AFS arranged an agreement for a focused metalcasting booth at SME’s Rapid show, which drew large crowds of casting buyers and designers. The booth distributed casting design and sourcing information and displayed award-winning casting examples.

• The annual Metal Casting Supply Chain Summit brought in 100 high-level supply chain managers and design engineers to discuss the state of the U.S. Casting industry and how to improve their casting relationships and practices.

• Cast in North America, held in conjunction with CastExpo, provided a place for casting buyers and designers to meet with North American metalcasters face to face. This event also included education sessions and Institute short-format courses geared to the interests and needs of casting end-users.
