Often overshadowed by fl ashy midfi elders and attackers, defenders Megan Douty and Alice Mercer were unsung heroes during their Maryland careers. Sure, they were Tewaaraton fi nalists, but never the dominant force on their Terps teams.
But on a U.S. senior team that emphasizes high-pressure,
full-fi eld defense, Douty and Mercer are thriving — and it’s hard not to notice. “We all like the goals and assists and fl ashy plays, so both of them have been under the radar in that regard, but the thing that sets them apart is their athleticism, and that’s something we pride ourselves on,” Team USA coach Ricky Fried said. “They can play 1v1 aggressive defense without fouling, and they have the ability to play on ball but also still understand the team concept, which makes them really a dual threat defensively.”
