perception that jobs like program- ming aren't an option for women. Through cuSTEMized—which operates under the tagline, “To make your child the hero of our educational and motivational storybooks”—children can create a personalized book with their own name and cartoon likeness as the main character. Each book tells a unique story that can be customized to any child’s inter- ests, whether that’s a young girl imagining herself as a chemist, a computer programmer, or even an astronaut. “Our mission is to get more

women interested in science and technology, and we think kids will be excited by seeing themselves as scientists,” Slowikowski says. “Broadly speaking, the world will be a better place when privileged people empower those who are oppressed. In the case of science and technology, that means empowering women and people of color.” With 200 books sold and more

than 4,000 free ebook downloads so far, Fan and Slowikowski are now planning to introduce their concept to elementary schools and teachers across the country. The pair even teamed with Science Club for Girls in Massachusetts to offer a personalized storybook as a graduation gift to all of the group's members. Based on the positive feedback

they've received, the cuSTEMized team is looking to expand their work by developing a new book showcasing women and minorities in applied scientific careers like bioengineering and astrophysics. "Oftentimes, children’s books are light on scientific content, but we think we can push that boundary and set higher expectations for kids," says Slowikowski. "If we expect more out of children, I think their abilities will surprise us."
