INDUSTRY NEWS

Shiloh Awarded DOE Grant Shiloh Industries, Inc. (Valley City,

Ohio), a supplier of lightweight- ing, noise and vibration solutions, has been awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) HPC4Mfg program to accelerate the development of innovative energy ef- ficient casting methods. For the project, “Development of

a Transformational Micro-Cooling Technology for High-Pressure Die Casting using High-Performance Computing,” Shiloh will work with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to accurately model the detail boiling in casting cooling channels. Te abil- ity to model critical variables such as uniform temperature distribution, various mechanical properties and heat transfer related defects will have a major impact on energy management and efficiency. “By incorporating high perfor- mance computing into our analytical processes we will be able to accurately model large sections of the cooling channels. Te data will be used in our tool simulations to create dies that will operate with lower energy costs and shorter cycles, reducing waste and rejected parts,” said Alex Reikher,

Walz Honors Dotson

Iron Castings U.S. Rep. Tim Walz (D-Minne-

sota) recently visited Dotson Iron Castings (Mankato, Minnesota) and honored the facility for its hiring of veterans. According to the Mankato Free Press,

Dotson president and CEO Jean Bye said 25 of the 140 employees at the facil- ity have served in the military. “Before it was popular to hire vet-

erans, this company had been doing that for a number of years,” Walz said, according to the Free Press. Te report said Walz toured the

facility as part of being a co-chair of the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus. Tey are responsible for the “I Hire Veterans” program to highlight companies that hire veterans.

technical fellow, research and develop- ment, Shiloh Industries. Te High Performance Computing

for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Pro- gram was established in March 2015 to create an ecosystem that allows experts at DOE’s national laboratories to work directly with manufactur-

ing industry members. Te program teaches manufacturers how to adopt or advance their use of high performance computing (HPC) to address manu- facturing challenges with a goal of increasing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and advancing clean energy technologies.
