capacity and quality of cleaning.

• Analyzing operational costs to justify the need for change and improve the process. In a basic sense, the Wheelabrator Plus team looks to identify the value of the potential benefit minus the cost of the changes. Wheelabrator Plus estimated abrasive waste was costing U.S. Foundry $64,000 per year. U.S. Foundry’s natural consumption for its blast machine was 64 lbs. per blast hour, but the discrepancy was exposed when com- pared to what the facility was purchasing and using. “I knew we were having a consumption problem,” said

Lane Jackson, finishing superintendent, U.S. Foundry. “We were buying more abrasive than we should, but we didn’t know how big the problem was or where. When we spoke to Wheelabrator Plus, they immediately knew what our natural abrasive consumption should be and saw the huge discrepancy between that and what we were buying.” Following thorough analysis of the line, the Wheela-

brator Plus team proposed a number of solutions, includ- ing a change in abrasive type (from S460 to S390), small adjustments to the machine and the installation of a new part. Tese changes could increase throughput capacity and reduce abrasive consumption down to an optimum level. “At that point in time, U.S. Foundry had a clear

choice: How do we fix this problem?” said Joe Craig, pro- ductivity manager, Wheelabrator Plus. “You can spend $14,000 on the improvements or waste $64,000 annually on additional abrasive.” U.S. Foundry’s decision to make the necessary changes was aided by the clear benefit calculation from Wheela- brator Plus, having identified and quantified all points of

waste and potential improvement in the process. Visit www.wheelabratorgroup.com for more information.
