Ligament Staples
Used in surgery to attach ligaments or tendons to the bone (such as in knee repair), ligament staples are made of a cobalt chromium casting alloy and are biocompatible.
Knee Replacement
The femoral component of knee replacements is cast in cobalt chromium. Other components include a plastic spacer serving as the patella and a metal plate placed on the tibial bone.
Ankle Replacement Leg Prosthetics
In a lower limb prosthesis, an internal structure called the pylon lends stability and strength to the construction. Pylons used to be made in only steel, but lighter weight models are now diecast in aluminum and titanium.
Painful arthritis or other diseases in the ankle may call for total joint replacement. In this case, the tibia and talus bones of the ankle joint are produced in cast cobalt chromium and coated with titanium. A plastic bearing is placed between the metal parts.
