BIONIC CASTINGS
Metals and various casting processes are crucial to many important medical developments that have been perceived as miraculous—saving not just lives but also quality of life.
Dental Appliances Cochlear Implants
For more than 25 years, cochlear implants have helped hearing-impaired children and adults gain the sense of hearing. The implant uses electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve to help the patient hear. Those electronics are placed in either a ceramic or cast titanium housing, although titanium has grown in preference because it is strong against impact and tight against leaks.
Investment casting is used by orthodontists and orthodontic equipment manufacturers to produce appliances that correct teeth that grow in the wrong way. The American Dental Association classifies dental casting alloys into three categories based on their noble metal content (noble alloys have low corrosion in oral applications). Gold is the most corrosion resistant noble metal.
Root Canal Posts
When root canals are required, dentists remove the nerve and blood vessel within a tooth root and replace it with a biocompatible material, meaning it is safe to use within a human body. Metal posts are used to strengthen the root. Sometimes these posts are cast as a single device for added strength.
