Letter to the Editor: Weight Savings Comes From More Than Structural Castings Regarding the article “Emission

Reduction Possibilities With Structur- al Castings” (MetalCasting Design & Purchasing, September/October 2015), a fi rst reading seemed to suggest it was strictly with structural castings that

the signifi cant weight savings—and thereby performance (emissions) ben- efi ts—was achieved. However, in doing further research, while the aluminum-intensive aspect did contribute signifi cantly to reduc-

ing weight, the use of carbon fi ber, titanium and magnesium (castings) throughout the vehicle was necessary as well. And while commercially avail- able, I would suggest these materials are not necessarily representative of those that are readily available or easily manufactured for the high volume needs of the majority of the automo- bile industry. T ey are costly as well. But research and topics such as

this are important for learning and understanding what is achievable. In fact, further information is available from SAE International with a com- plete book on the collaboration among all the companies involved [“T e Multi Material Lightweight Vehicle (MMLV) Project”].
