Feeding Your Family’s Soul: Dinner Table Spirituality

Are you looking for a way to engage your elementary- to high school-aged children in conversations about faith? Feeding Your Family’s Soul (Paraclete Press, 2016; paracletepress.com) by Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle just might be the answer! Fifty-two weeks of table prayers, teachings and reflection questions are offered in this title along with some yummy recipes to try.

While it’s written from a Roman Catholic viewpoint, your family can easily adapt these teachings as needed to reflect a Lutheran perspective by using your copy of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, or by having your preteens and teens download the free Small Catechism app offered by Augsburg Fortress (augsburgfortress.org).

As ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has said, it’s time to “dust off our Small Catechisms and take another look at the basics of the faith.” What better time than during a meal together?

Elizabeth Caywood Caywood is director of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod resource center and coordinator of ELCA resource centers. She is a regular contributor to this page.
