MOAA STAFF LEAD LOCAL 9/11 EVENT As part of Alexandria Veterans, Col. John Sims, USA (Ret), a dep- uty director in MOAA’s Transition Center, helped organize through social media a 9/11 “flash commemoration” at Market Square in Old Town Alexandria, Va. The impromptu gather- ing focused on remem- bering and honoring all those who served and sacrificed for the nation following the 9/11 attack and brought together both military and non- military members of the community.

Troops Observe 9/11 Anniversary

A

bout 1,200 troops from 42 countries serving in Kabul, Af- ghanistan, joined together Sept.

11 to solemnly observe the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. U.S. Army Gen. John F. Campbell, com-

mander, Resolute Support and U.S. Forces — Afghanistan, spoke about the day and reflected on service in Afghanistan. “That pledge is why we came to Af-

ghanistan and why we remain, to defeat those who attacked us and those who protected and provided sanctuary for them,” Campbell said. “Since our arrival, our coalition and Afghan partners have

applied relentless pressure against the terrorist networks that operate here, disrupting any ability of these networks to plan and execute further attacks against us.”

A month after the attack, the U.S. launched an effort to oust the Taliban re- gime in Afghanistan. The U.S. quickly was joined by international partners. Today, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission is to train, advise, and assist the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces to become self-reliant in providing security for the people of Afghanistan and its freely elected government.

More than 300 people attended the event, which included a welcome message from Sims, the singing of the national anthem, an invocation, and the op- portunity for attendees to share memories of the service and sacrifice of all Americans on 9/11. “This event showed

you don’t need to spend months plan- ning something,” Sims said. “The power of citizenry is incredible.”
