his state Senate campaign raised more than $330,000; the opposition raised nearly twice that amount and still lost.

Once in office, Holtzclaw put his military training to work. “I under- stand the concept of following a tactical plan to achieve a long-term strategic goal. I’m able to communi- cate with leadership, colleagues, and constituents the importance of stra- tegic planning: messaging the plan. Staying focused and staying on target to achieve the goals we’ve laid out are also important.” Many veterans who throw their hats in the political ring are motivat- ed by an interest in national defense issues and veterans’ affairs. Lynn cautions, however, that even in a com- munity where military concerns are a priority, like Holtzclaw’s, candidates must be willing to take a position on a variety of issues. “Do you think that small businesses should be required to cater gay marriages? What is your feeling on prayer in schools? These are things that someone is probably going to ask you on the campaign, and you have to have an answer,” he says. “You have to make sure you’re a well- rounded candidate.” “The campaign process can be

grueling,” Holtzclaw adds. “The opposition will twist the facts and portray you as something you are not. The Marine instinct in me is to hit back hard, but we decided to stay on the high ground, be positive, and focus on our campaign platform.” When things got bumpy for her on the campaign trail, McSally drew on her experience as a fighter pilot. “If you get distracted and start getting all wrapped around the axle about what they’re aiming at you, then you’re never going to hit the target — and the target is the mission,” she says.
