has always been at the heart of Willow Valley Communities’ success.

With the opening of The Clubhouse, Willow Valley breaks through convention to create something that once again helps redefi ne senior living. Every amenity in this 30,000-square- foot building illustrates the spirit of “agelessness” that guides the philosophy of development at Willow Valley. The building is also a refl ection of our organization’s commitment to intergenerational engagement. The Clubhouse opens a new world of possibilities for those who live at Willow Valley and creates a spirit of vibrancy compelling to people of all ages.

Life Lived Forward

“United by Service.” He left several other names out of his list of altru- ists: Jesus Christ, St. Francis of Assisi, most … Medal of Honor recipients, and those following the unwritten code of those in combat, “no one is left behind,” to name a few. Person- ally, I would not have included Attila, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Mao Tse- tung, and Saddam Hussein, nor [do I] sense any altruism in them at all. His letter made me wonder why he joined a service organization like the Navy. I remember well those coming

back from World War II who, for the first time, saw another country and met people of vastly different back- grounds. They were changed by the service they had performed, and most were proud of what they had done. They brought back to my little home- town wives from Italy and France who spoke a different language and taught us about diversity and the similarities we all shared. They did not consider what they had done slavery, and when my father returned I did not see him as a freed slave but [as] my hero. We have a few young people

who move quickly from high school to genius status, but most young people would gain from the time away from home, the chance to see a different world, and some time to mature. Here is my vote for some kind of universal service. —Col. David W. Polhemus,USA(Ret) LifeMember

16 MILITARY OFFICER NOVEMBER 2015

As a young man, I lived at a time when the Korean War was raging and all of my contemporary friends and relatives knew we were soon to receive our no- tices. It seems that within a matter of months we were pretty much all gone. We went, we served, and those [who] did return spoke with great respect
