One of the five armed service branches and one of the seven uniformed services, the Marine Corps is the nation’s amphibious force and has been a component of the Navy since 1834.
Among the 186,754 Marines on active duty, 33,883 are currently deployed, equating to 19 percent of the active duty force and 31 percent of operating forces. Deployed Marines are forward-engaged in 38 countries in support of combatant commander requirements.
The Marine Corps fights as Marine Air-Ground Task Forces (MAGTFs). MAGTFs consist of command, aviation, logistics, and ground combat elements. There are three major MAGTFs, known as Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEFs).
I MEF: Located at Camp Pendleton, Calif., I MEF consists of 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 1st Marine Logistics Group.
II MEF: Located at Camp Lejeune, N.C., II MEF consists of 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 2nd Marine Logistics Group.
III MEF: Located in Okinawa, Japan, III MEF consists of 3rd Marine Division, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, and 3rd Marine Logistics Group.
The Marine Corps maintains seven sea-based Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs). MEUs are comprised of about 2,200 personnel. At any given time, two to three MEUs are forward-deployed in support of combatant commanders.
Approximately 1 out of every 9 Marines is an officer. Approximately 8 percent of Marines are women. The Marine Corps Embassy Security Group protects personnel and national security information and equipment at diplomatic and consular facilities around the world.
As of Aug. 5, 2016, the Marine Corps has participated in 230 operations, 35 amphibious operations, 240 theater security cooperation events, and 200 exercises since 2015.
