Just a note to correct an error in [the September issue of Military Officer]: In the “Fall Retirement Guide,” Florida is described as being in a subtropical climate (as the tropics are defined as being south of the Tropic of Cancer). The “tropic of cancer” line mere- ly defines a geographical zone, not a climate zone. The blue areas on this map depict three different tropical climate types on Florida (the “A” type climates being tropical). These tropical zones, by the way, allow for the planting of many exotic orna- mentals in landscaping and gardens, as well as allowing many invasive plant and animal species to over- power the native habitats. Climate is the characteristic con- dition of the atmosphere near the earth’s surface at a certain place on earth. It is the long-term weather of that area (at least 30 years). This in- cludes the region’s general pattern of weather conditions, seasons, and weather extremes like hurricanes, droughts, or rainy periods.
