They also might offer cultural orientations and train- ing specific to your program. Some programs have special requirements such as fluency in a second language, specific work experience, or even ad- vanced degrees, but most simply are seeking people willing to serve.


It’s not about me — or is it? Defining personal goals for your vol- unteering expedition might sound self-centered, but it’s important to make the most of your experience. Although making the world a better place is certainly the primary goal of volunteers, there can be other ben- efits. Someone considering a career change might first try teaching in a voluntary capacity in Spain. An as- piring organic farmer might test his compost-making skills in Bulgaria. Volunteering also can provide valu-


able work experience with tangible, transferable skills. Some programs are highly coveted by potential volunteers because those options really stand out on résumés. Long-term volunteer as- signments might even have the poten- tial to become permanent positions. Depending on their school, stu- dents might earn academic credit toward graduation, allowing them to graduate early or be placed in desir- able international internships. Don’t forget, your experience


doesn’t have to be all work and no play. While you’re there, make plans to snorkel off the coast of the Sey- chelles, ride a zip line through the Peruvian rainforest, or take a Bolly- wood dance class in India.


Managing expectations Volunteering won’t necessarily fulfill your lifelong dream to visit Europe; the work, although rewarding, can be physically and emotionally chal-

lenging, and your surroundings might remind you more of a rugged, desolate campsite than the beautiful French countryside. Many volun- teers don’t complete their assign- ments because of the vast cultural differences, or they simply miss the comforts of home. It’s important to work with your volunteer organiza- tion and consult seasoned interna- tional volunteers to understand the realities of the situation you’re about to enter. Some cultural differences can seem radical; for example, in some countries, women are expected to be subservient — will this prevent you from having a positive trip? Take time to learn about the conditions and customs of the com- munities to which you’re traveling so your interaction with the people you’re serving and working with will be rewarding rather than awk- ward and disappointing.


Best-laid plans Despite your best intentions and efforts, it’s likely the problems that exist when you arrive at your desti- nation still will be there when you leave. Volunteers sometimes are crestfallen at the conditions around them, and some leave disappointed that they didn’t change the world in one fell swoop. Author Dana Sachs recently made


two trips to Greece to assist refu- gees there. She found the extremely hot weather hard to deal with, but toughest for her was trying to en- tertain refugee children. “In some ways, they are the most resilient,” says Sachs, “but they are so trau- matized that they often cry or even physically fight one another, and your heart just drops.” Take comfort in the fact you’re making a difference by preparing a [CONTINUES ON PAGE 81]
