fromthepresident T (MMFI) These two subsidiary 501(c)(3) chari-

ties off er a solid one-two punch of sup- port for military families in an area of singular MOAA expertise: career devel- opment. The MOAA Scholarship Fund helps military family children further their education, while the MMFI pro- vides best-in-class programs and services to empower currently serving troops and veterans — and their spouses — to achieve lifelong career potential. This year, the MOAA Scholarship Fund will disburse more than $9.6 million to nearly 1,800 students — a 4.7-percent increase over 2015. The fund received a platinum rating from Guidestar, setting MOAA apart from other military and vet- eran support organizations.

Two for Your List

Members’ charitable donations to MOAA’s Military Family Initiative and Scholarship Fund will help uniformed service families enjoy the quality of life they’ve earned and deserve.

The end of the year brings many events that play into our values — families, holidays, giving, and continued service to one another. This is also an ideal time to refl ect on our accomplishments before starting a “to-do” list for the com- ing year. Your membership and support throughout the year have been instrumen- tal in MOAA’s advocacy eff orts; I cannot thank you enough for that and for your continued engagements at home with leg- islators and prospective members. Looking ahead, a priority on my per-

sonal to-do list will be increasing aware- ness of MOAA’s subsidiaries:  MOAA Scholarship Fund  MOAA Military Family Initiative

Likewise, the MMFI exceeded its rev-

enue targets in its fi rst two years of opera- tion and plans to expand its impact in 2017 with the launch of its Council/Chapter Community Grant Program, whereby the foundation will fund a minimum of fi ve grants (not exceeding $5,000 each) in direct support of chapter or council programs serving military families in the areas of military spouse career develop- ment and warrior-family reintegration.* Despite the signifi cant impact of these

charities, many members are unaware of them as a source of assistance for them- selves or their troops. It is also likely many members have not yet considered support- ing these charities. This lack of awareness prompted me to put this at the top of my to-do list, and I ask you to help by putting it on your list as well. As we close out a year of remarkable

achievement, I ask every member to con- sider making an end-of-year gift to these subsidiary charities. It’s easy to contribute online at www.moaa.org/donate. A bequest or other planned-giving vehicle is also an option worth considering to create a last- ing legacy, limit your tax burden, and sus- tain these MOAA programs in perpetuity. The MOAA family has a great deal to be thankful for, and what better time of year to express that thanks?
