ith the release of Golf Digest’s 2017-‘18 ranking of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, Northern California makes a major impact on the list with a total of eight courses. Since 1966, this biennial ranking has been considered the prevailing consensus of the best of the best. Bookended by No. 1 Pine Valley GC (Pine Valley, N.J.) and No. 100 Eagle Point GC (Wilmington, N.C.), the roll call includes the following from Northern California:

W Mayacama GC

3 Cypress Point (3) 7 Pebble Beach GL (7) 31 The Olympic Club (Lake) (33) 37 San Francisco GC (32)

49 Spyglass Hill GC (48) 65 Monterey Peninsula CC (Shore) (67) 93 The Preserve GC (87) 99 Mayacama GC (101)

he Jack Clark South Course at Alameda’s public 36-hole Chuck Corica Golf Complex is a sure bet to find itself on the “must play” list this fall. With an assist from famed golf course architect Rees Jones, who also designed Poppy Ridge GC in Livermore, golfers will soon be able to experience a unique, gently rolling Australian Sand- belt-style golf course redesign, unlike its flat predecessor.

Greenway Golf assumed golf opera- tions in September 2012, and have since rebuilt the 9-hole par-3 Mif Albright Course and resurfaced the driving range with drought-tolerant grasses. They also added a popular short game facility, and increased the fun factor with GolfBoards and outdoor music. With the work being done in phases, golfers can play the Earl Fry North Course while watching crews work their magic on the South. Follow the project’s progress at alamedagolf.com.
