group of past NCGA Rules gurus by scoring a perfect 100 on the USGA Rules of Golf exam. The only other NCGA staff members to ace the grueling exam are Senior Director of Operations Ryan Gregg, former Director of Edu- cation and Rules

Gail Rogers and former Junior Tour of Northern California Tournament Director John Van der Borght (now

with the USGA as Manager, Rule’s Communications). In his previous three attempts,

Farb scored a 98 on the exam— missing one question on both the open book and closed book portions. As for what it takes to ace the

exam, Farb chiefly relied on his expe- rience and daily duties, which include answering Rules questions, maintain- ing the NCGA’s Rules education programs and officiating tournaments. He “studied” for the exam by updating the NCGA Rules presentation that is used at Association seminars. “The amount of time I’ve put in to

learning the Rules is immeasurable. We don’t really study it because it’s what we do,” Farb said. “You have to

know the definitions verbatim, as well as the Rules and Rules sub-section numbers. I’ve seen a lot of the examples they use

on the test during competitions.” While the number and

percentage varies each year, USGA statistics show that on average only 1% of exam takers ace the 100 question test, which is given at the conclusion of one of the association’s annual three-and-a- half day Rules of Golf workshops. All examinees who scored 92 or

higher, including Gregg and Assistant Director of Rules and Competitions Rick Leoncio, received a special USGA certificate showing that they demon- strated a strong knowledge of the Rules of Golf.
