So near, so spa…

The programme has been announced for UKSG’s 2017 Conference and Exhibition, which will be held in the spa town of Harrogate from 10 to 12 April. The event is a major three-day fixture in

the scholarly communications calendar. The conference combines high-quality plenary presentations, lightning talks and breakout sessions with entertaining social events and a major trade exhibition. It covers a wide range of topics relevant

to librarians, publishers, content providers and intermediaries, attracting around 900 delegates each year from around the world and presenting a great opportunity to network, keep up to date with trends and obtain practical information. The event is open to everyone, and UKSG members benefit from an attractive discount on delegate fees. Delegates will be able to enjoy three

days of presentations; plenary sessions will include ‘Threats and opportunities’, Access, ethics and piracy’, ‘Irresponsible publication practices,’ ‘Consolidating into a new Industry 2017,’ ‘Scholarly communications in the wider world,’ and

The Harrogate International Centre, Harrogate, where UKSG 2017 will take place

‘Post-Truth: the role of publishers and librarians.’ As well as these presentations, there will

be a series of ‘breakout sessions’ running through the conference, on subjects as diverse as ‘New university presses and academic-led presses,’ ‘What does it mean to be a competent bibliometrician?’, and ‘How can you improve discoverability through richer metadata?’ As ever, there will be a wide range

of social activities in the programme, including a 70s party night on Monday 12 March, with a reception and conference dinner, while on Tuesday 13 March entertainment will be provided by a band.

Tuesday evening’s events will have the theme ‘Ruby Tuesday’. The event will be held at the Harrogate

International Centre, 10 to 12 April 2017. Booking is now open and the form

Taking words further

It’s just a few weeks until London Book Fair (LBF), which will once again be held at London’s Olympia venue. LBF has become an important destination for academic and STM publishing, a sector that leads the way in so many areas, not the least technology. From seminars and awards, to big-name exhibitors and tech suppliers, there are many reasons for members of the scholarly communications sector to attend. This year LBF has the strapline: Talking Words Further; Content Across Media. The academic, professional

& STM area is a vibrant part of the event, featuring more than 60 publishing companies and its own dedicated theatre, The

Faculty. This facility, sponsored by Copyright Clearance Center in partnership with The Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), is the hub for debate and learning with academic, scientific and professional topics. Last last year it hosted more than 800 visitors at a three-day programme of engaging seminars. Elsewhere, London Book Fair Insights Seminar Programme includes a dedicated scholarly stream, sponsored by Copyright Clearance Center, which covers a broad range of academic topics.

l London Book Fair has selected global literacy not-for-profit organisation Worldreader as its Charity of the Year for 2017.

34 Research Information February/March 2017

Founded in 2010 by David Risher and Colin McElwee, Worldreader aims to put libraries of digital books in the hands of children and families across the world. The company works closely with device manufacturers, local and international publishers, governments, education officials and local communities to help promote digital reading,

especially in areas where books are a scarce resource. As The London Book Fair’s

Charity of the Year, Worldreader will exhibit at the Fair in March and receive extensive marketing support before and during the event. LBF will also provide Worldreader with year-long promotion on its website, and an opportunity to fundraise via a fundraising button online.
