Spring hasn’t quite sprung yet in the northern hemisphere, but here at Research Information we are already gearing up for the scholarly communications conference season – and, accordingly, this issue looks ahead to three UK events: Researcher to Reader, UKSG 2017, and London Book Fair. We’ll be at all three events, observing and reporting the goings-on. The role of subscription agents

comes under question in Rebecca Pool’s feature on page 4, with several commentators offering their opinions on what the future holds for the sector, amid a fast-shifting industry scene. Open access books represent one of the few segments in publishing that are showing healthy growth, and in this issue we talk to two companies – Knowledge Unlatched and InTech Open – that have been making waves in the last 12 months. There’s also a look at how independent publishers are taking advantage of recent trends in the industry. There’s an in-depth look at patent

landscape analysis, an investigation into the power of graph databases for research, a look at how academic publishing is on the rise in Bulgaria, and an argument that copyright could provide the antidote to the growth of so-called fake news. Two interviews with major industry

players complete a fairly packed edition of Research Information – we hope you enjoy reading it, and look forward to seeing you soon!
