No-nonsense Guide to Archives and Recordkeeping

The No-nonsense Guide to Archives and Recordkeeping is ideal for professionals involved in the management of archives and records, especially if they are just starting out or without formal training, says the book’s publisher Facet Publishing.

Facet says the book covers all aspects of record-keeping and archives management. It follows the records’ journey from creation, through the application of classification and access techniques, evaluation for business, legal and historical value and finally to destruction or preservation and access in the archive.

Based on the training days run by the author Margaret Crockett and her business partner, the book deals with records and archives in all formats. It uses checklists, practical exercises, sample documentation, case studies and diagrams to ensure an accessible and pragmatic approach, allowing anyone to get to grips with the basics quickly. The book is divided into four main work

members, all of which are non-profit cultural organisations.

Muse expects to launch the UNE Book Collections on Muse in spring of 2016, with an initial offering of around 3,000 titles from more than 20 UNE member presses. More details on the available titles and collections will be announced in the coming months.

UNE has been working for almost 30 years in the promotion and dissemination of academic content in the Spanish language. Now, with its UNEbook project, it has brought together in one place most of the digital production of its 69 members, and looks forward to making this available to libraries through Project Muse. www.muse.jhu.edu

The company says the new web interface is simpler, with reorganised menus and extensive online help, making it easier for new users to be productive quickly. The number of clicks required to carry out common analysis tasks have been reduced – in some cases by 60 per cent or more – with the aim of speeding and simplifying workflows. www.elsevier.com

Crockett said: ‘Managing records and archives is really interesting and rewarding but it is also really important: if we can’t tame our paper and digital mountains into manageable documentation which tells the story of our lives, our organisations and our societies we cannot prove the things we need to prove and lose our memory of the past.’ www.facetpublishing.co.uk

Sage Recommends Sage and Expert System have released Sage Recommends, a discovery capability within the Sage Knowledge platform that provides users with links to related Sage content to support academic research.

Powered by Luxid software, the feature uses Sage’s proprietary social science taxonomy to reveal connections between content and concepts across disciplines. First appearing on the recently enhanced Sage Knowledge platform, Sage Recommends suggests further reading within the context of a book chapter, reference entry, or streaming video – referring readers to related journals, datasets, and other reference material hosted on other Sage platforms.

The feature brings together the knowledge mined from Sage’s 1.5 million journal articles and more than 250,000 book chapters and reference works. Sage says it enables a ‘serendipitous research experience’ across all of Sage’s content platforms, leading students and faculty to uncover relationships between topics across the social science disciplines. ‘Sage Recommends is the first of its kind to offer a truly cutting-edge research tool for social scientists,’ said Martha Sedgwick, executive director of product management at Sage. ‘The multidisciplinary thesaurus under the hood of Sage Recommends presents contextualised links across social science fields at the point of need, offering the right research recommendations at the right time across all of Sage’s platforms.’ www.sagepublications.com
