Leader: Tim Gillett Latin flair

While the attention of the scholarly publishing industry has this season been centred on conferences and

events in the USA and Europe, in this issue of Research Information we continue to look at developing regions of the world. Our focus is on Latin America, with case studies and reports from countries including Cuba, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil and Chile – as well as an overview of the development charity INASP’s work in Central and South America.

In the next edition we will be looking at academic publishing in the Middle East, and welcome the input of anyone who would like to be involved. We have short event reports from conferences in Charleston, Frankfurt, Cape Town and London, with fuller descriptions of each event on our website. As well as our three set-piece features on metrics, databases, and content delivery, we have a wide selection of contributed analysis pieces on subjects as diverse as: research funding; using library collections to create virtual environments and interactive fiction; the streamlining of copyright clearance; and the unlikely connection between ice cream sales and the publishing industry! Ice cream is a far-off thought for us in northern Europe, as we move through the autumn and into winter. No matter where you are, we wish all of our readers a happy festive season and the very best wishes for 2016.
