For the first letter of the New Year I often look back at previous editions to see what was happening at the beginning of the last couple of years. I must admit it makes rather depressing reading! I like to err on the optimistic side and look for positive signs of growth in the economy and the construction industry in particular. This year is no different – there are some hopes of improvement to the infrastructure and support for small businesses, but it is the same message as several years ago. I am not sure that, in truth, the country has made much progress in these areas. In the Autumn Statement for instance the chancellor announced an increase on investment on economic infrastructure from 0.8% of GDP to 1.2%. Overall on infrastructure as a whole the UK spends 2.7% of GDP. Whilst this is to be welcomed, as a nation we still fall way behind many countries in this respect – China for instance spends more than 8%. There is also a recurring worry about the skills shortage in the industry and the lack of
enough support for training and apprenticeships. Whilst there have been some positive steps in this direction, the feeling is that investment in training needs to be doubled and the government needs to play a strong role in this. With the uncertainty around Brexit, the message I am hearing is that for the time being we are all trying to make the best
of it and soldier on in the face of a rather uncertain future. With political upheavals in many countries, not least of all the USA I think 2017 is going to be a challenging year for us all. In the last couple of months of the year, Peter and I visited SALTEX, the Sports Amenities and Landscape Trade Exhibition,
and the Sandown Park ToolFair. You can see reports and photos of these later in the magazine and on our Facebook page. Peter Brett has written reviews on the award winning angle driver from DART, some Quick Steel Adhesive and workshop
wipes from Delta, the Draper Tools Storm Force range, a compact drill/driver from Fein, a pair of boots from JCB and last but not least Wiha’s set of Magic Ring L-Keys. Peter has been very busy, but enjoys giving products a thorough work out – he is certainly sent a very wide and diverse range to get his teeth into! Also in this edition, James Miller from Dust Control has contributed a very interesting article to the Voice of the Industry
feature on the dangers of dust, and Ben Dyer from Powered Now entertains us with his view of Robots challenging our workforce. Craig Phillips has once again contributed his advice in Celebrity Column, this month on updating your power tool collection. At ToolBUSINESS+HIRE we are very pleased to welcome Linda Oxley to the staff as the new assistant editor. We hope
she will be accompanying us to the Executive Hire Show and Totally DIY and Tools, both being held in the Ricoh Arena Coventry in February. There are previews of both these shows in this edition. I hope you enjoy this edition of ToolBUSINESS+HIRE Magazine. Please take a look at our website where we regularly add
information to the Product Showcase and Company News and also, having read the reviews you can see videos of the tools in action. Keep up to date throughout 2017 with the magazine and by visiting
www.toolbusiness.co.uk. Let’s hope it will be a successful year for us all.
