SouthOf Border Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

“Be careful not to party too late,” warns local guide Pablo Hein, “you’ll miss the best fishing.” With a thumping nightlife, world-class surf- ing and undiscovered sport fishing treasures, Santa Teresa is a small tourist village with a lot to offer. Hein, who runs Sea Kayak Adventures (www.pescatica.com), fishes the area year- round. The best time to visit is winter when the swell is small and sardines get trapped close to shore. Anglers launch out of Mai Pais fishing village where it is a short paddle to productive reefs. Sardines fill the bay and draw in offshore species. Trophy hunters paddle after schools of bait or chase div- ing birds then throw big topwater and soft- plastic lures at crashing tuna, wahoo and bills. For an easier pace, Hein guides clients to nearshore reefs to pull on big snap- per and jacks. Accommodations run the gambit, but all are close to town and the beach. If it’s too rough to go fishing, peeling beach breaks keep surfers in the water.
