increased 13 percent; we sanctioned 4,100 events; instructor certifications increased to more than 9,400; the ACA directly supported over 30 public policy and clean water actions; ACA State Directors are doing a great job increasing awareness and education; and new ACA clubs increased by 15 percent.

These are a few department goals for 2016:

STEWARDSHIP The ACA’s Paddle Green program is working with clubs, schools and the NOAA on trash collection, as well as active removal and data collection. Public Policy is working on access issues in the North and Southwest, as well as clean water issues in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. ACA partner PVS (Polynesian Voyaging Society) is finalizing landing of the Hokule’a to raise awareness about the world’s oceans and indigenous cultures. They plan to land on the east coast, weather permitting, in April of 2016.

EDUCATION The ACA’s 8,000+ instructors are introducing more people to paddling every

year. The Safety Education Committee meets three times a year to keep the standards and quality of education high. The ACA’s education team is hoping to officially expand into coaching by 2017.

GRANTS The adaptive program received funding to improve access, education and help hold friendly competitions for spinal cord injured paddlers. A number of clubs are involved in hosting the clinics and adaptive trainings.

COMPETITION The ACA is increasing the number of competitions, from whitewater to SUP to kayak angling (2017). ACA is continuing to work with elite competition partner USA Canoe/Kayak in preparation for the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro later this summer. ACA is looking forward to the opening of the Oklahoma Whitewater Center in Oklahoma City. Membership is what allows ACA to educate and support paddlers, so please encourage people to join and enjoy all the great benefits.
