is known as the endocannabinoid receptor system, a complex signaling network within the human body. The cannabis plant is rich in phytonutrients, antioxidants, essential oils and some 80 cannabinoids, the most important of which appears to be cannabidiol or CBD for short. Without a doubt the most balanced source of CBD is found in industrial hemp. Hemp’s sister plant, known derisively as marijuana has been bred to be increasingly high in the well- known psychoactive cannabinoid known as THC. While hemp contains a small amount of THC, the balance of all cannabinoids that are in hemp fi t like a lock and key serving to spark and activate our endocannabinoid receptors, which in turn help to regulate the way every body system functions, creating a feeling of wellbeing but WITHOUT the high of marijuana.

Cannabinoids were patented in 2003 by The United States Department of Health and Human Services (patent #6,630,507) as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. The abstract lists CBD’s use in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, HIV, and dementia, as well as providing cardioprotective benefi ts from ischemic insults of strokes. For hundreds of years mankind has been using these plants with overwhelmingly safe and positive results. Indeed until the late 1930s, no American doctor would have left home to care for patients without cannabis in his black bag! It was historically used for a wide variety of ailments such as autoimmune conditions, seizures and spasms, stress, depression and anxiety, chronic pain and neuropathy, as well as nausea, irregular cells, eye conditions such as glaucoma, and skin conditions such as psoriasis and

much further along in the study and use of cannabinoids for health, but for the fact that all cannabis, including hemp has been outlawed for the last 80 years with much negative propaganda, causing scientifi c testing to be curbed. A new day has come though! As of 2014, CBD from hemp is now legal in the State of Florida (H.B.843), and medical marijuana is well on its way to becoming legal in an increasing number of states. There is much information in PubMed already, and soon we will begin to see many more medical studies and an increased knowledge of how these God-given plants can benefi t humankind.

Having Gratitude Yields More Happiness than Having Things

T

wo studies from Baylor University have confi rmed that materialism can lead to feeling less satisfi ed with life, while a sense of gratitude reverses some of the negative effects of the pursuit of things. The research, led by Professor

James Roberts, Ph.D., included questionnaires sent to 246 marketing students from another university, focusing on happiness and satisfaction with a 15-minute survey that included a 15-point materialism scale. The study found that individuals that focused on achieving material goals were less satisfi ed with their lives, less happy and had lower self-esteem. Meanwhile, the study found that grateful students found more meaning in their lives and felt a greater sense of satisfaction. “Individuals high in gratitude

showed less of a relationship between materialism and its negative affect. Additionally, individuals high in materialism showed decreased life satisfaction when either gratitude or positive affect was low,” note the researchers.
