New care home takes dementia design a step forward E
mulating the design of a high-end private members club, a new purpose-built dementia residential and day care centre has opened in the heart of London. Designed by Leon Black Architectural Interior Design,
and constructed by Portview, Chelsea Court Place offers the same luxury environment and services of a 5-star hotel, but with curated 24-hour nursing care provided by a team of dementia-trained professionals. Features of the development, launched by Innovative Aged Care, include 15 en-suite apartments, a 48-seat restaurant and private dining room, a 24-hour café, a spa and beauty salon, a cinema and library, a sensory and treatment room and an indoor garden. Residents will also have the use of gardens at the adjacent St Luke’s Church. Inside the building, person-centred software is used
to track the progress of residents and provide precise information throughout the day. Dementia Care Mapping also gives an understanding of the specific care needs of each individual. As well as residential apartments, the facility will also house a new innovation in dementia care – the Dementia Memory Club and Day Care Unit. This offers support to individuals with memory
problems on both a daily or short-term basis. Visitors will have access to activities, excursion and social interaction. It will also offer training and advice to carers

Laurence Geller CBE, said: “The club fuses cutting-edge dementia-friendly interior design with state-of-the-art technology, delivering an innovative sanctuary designed to support and elongate the quality of life for its members.” Chief executive, Guy Geller, added: “We have created a beautiful home and concept that doesn’t restrict the freedom of our residents.” The development will champion research innovation
through a partnership with the University of West London, helping to enhance dementia care facilities in the future. Managing director, James Cook, said: “Every level of
attention to detail has been taken to deliver a safe, tranquil and nurturing environment that is supportive to the unique needs of our residents. “We are passionate about pioneering the latest research,
techniques and technology in our approach to care.” The location for the home, in the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea, was chosen as it has the highest growth in new dementia diagnoses in the city, but the smallest number of beds, with a ratio of just 0.2 per 100.
