EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the first edition of mhdf for 2017.

As the last year ended, the Government announced it had accepted the recommendations put forward by the Mental Health Task Force to enhance psychiatric services across the country.

This will see millions of pounds being spent on enhancing existing services and introducing new care pathways as well as improving the facilities from which they are delivered.

Over the next year, we will continue to bring you all the news from the construction, design and FM sectors; and keep you up to date with new product releases, research, and funding channels.

Early indications suggest there will still be investment in the mental health sector from NHS trusts across the UK over the next year, albeit a reduced number of schemes than in previous years.

The emphasis, this year, is instead expected to be on improving existing facilities and delivering estate that will enable the provision of more-specialised services. This will probably mean smaller projects than in previous years, and it will call for very-innovative design thinking.

While this market staggers slightly, the private sector will also offer increased opportunities as providers move in to produce facilities and care programmes that the NHS is currently lacking.

In this edition of mhdf, you can read about some of the improvements in the pipeline (p7). There are also details of the latest projects and programmes (p9-11); and a question- and-answer feature in which Dr Claire Craig, from Sheffield Hallam University, explains how environmental design impacts people suffering from dementia (p13-15).

Now we want to hear from you. If you are involved in mental health or dementia design or construction projects, please get in touch. We would also like to speak to suppliers of new products, and researchers who can offer further details of what makes a good environment from those suffering with mental health problems or dementia.
