Schoolchildren name new roads in Thornbury

Pupils at Manorbrook Primary School in Thornbury have been busy shaping their local community by naming roads at a new development currently being built nearby. Housebuilder David Wilson Homes provided a list of names that reflected the different aspects of Park Farm’s medieval and agricultural history for the children who voted on their favourites. Buttercup Meadow, Deer Park and Haybob Way proved to be the most popular choices coming out as the top three names chosen by


the children. Deer Park holds particular significance as in the 16th century Edward Stafford, the 3rd Duke of Buckinghamshire, applied for a licence to create a 1,500 acre deer park in this area. Jurgen Bowering, a sales adviser, from David Wilson Homes went to a special commendation assembly to present the school with certificates to thank them for their contribution. Jurgen said: “The pupils have chosen some excellent names that reflect the area perfectly.


We think it’s very important that the local community plays a part in the new communities we are creating.”


Manorbrook Primary School headteacher Darren Stanley said: “It’s fantastic that our pupils have had the opportunity to influence the changes happening in their community. The naming of the roads involved the whole school and the children were really excited to be involved. We also used the project as an opportunity to revisit our teachings on road safety and local history.”
