94 SALES ROUND UP

With further milk price cuts of late, trade across the UK has been a mixed bag of ups and downs with trade generally being reported as steady with the exception of one or two sales which have sadly taken a knock due to the economic climate in the industry. Here’s a summary of what’s been happening in the sales rings and what the auctioneers are saying.

in the milk industry and the increasing downward pressures on the milk price, I am somewhat surprised at the current level of trade.

Of course it has slipped back from where we were 12 months ago, but the dairy industry is in a different place today from then too, however, the trade has not seen the same scale of demise as the milk price. Demand for fresh milkers has been strong and we have still seen the best getting to the £2000 mark and over. The market demands

strong animals which have substance to fit in to modern dairy practise. Some dispersal animals have been harder to sell, as many are preferring to spend the money and get milk in the tank rather than buying staler cows. The other factor is the variation in milk contracts which naturally effects the purchasers budgets, this has certainly helped stabilise the trade. There is no doubt our location has helped our market sustain good prices in the sale ring as we have a "decent milk field" with plenty of varied contracts. Many producers that are

committed to the industry still need to find their dairy replacements and are looking for quality. As many would, I would love to get my hands on a crystal ball, but I think the demand for fresh milk will remain firm as producers are still keen to keep production up. Off note cows may become trickier to sell as we approach the winter months, as many producers will not want to carry passengers during this time. Trade forecast is difficult to predict as changes to the dairy industry seem to be rapid these days.

2014. One of the main reasons for the strong demand is down to producers replacing their less efficient cows with younger ones due to the dramatic downturn in milk sales and we see this trend continuing
