Google Chromecast
When Google launched Nexus 4 with Android 4.2 in 2012 highlighting its compatibility with Miracast technology, it realised that there were no affordable compatible receivers available. To resolve this problem they developed a multimedia streaming device compatible with Android and Windows and from 2014 also with iOS, Mac and ChromeOS.
Chromecase is a receiver that uses the DIAL (Discover And Launch) protocol. To use this, you need to open an Android application, e.g. YouTube, and send the video to Chromecast. Chromecast connects directly to the internet and reproduces the video, enabling you to control it using your smartphone.
In this way, your Smartphone enables you to discover and launch videos and control the way content is reproduced. This is an extra function that other protocols do not have. Of course, it also enables complete streaming of your desktop, and is a mirror display like Airplay or Miracast.
UPnP, DLNA, Play To
DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance. DLNA uses UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) to send content.
In reality, DLNA is not a solution for sending content wirelessly. It uses a local network to send content in a simple way. For instance, it is possible to open Windows Media Player on your PC and use the “Play To” function to send the content to the TV or Xbox. Compatible devices detect each other automatically once connected to the local network.
Its disadvantage is that it was developed several years ago when all content was local, so it does not work with Netflix, YouTube or music streaming services. Moreover, it does not allow you to control the presentation or create a mirror display of your desktop.
WHDI
This is a wireless communication standard via Wi-Fi for sending high definition videos. WHDI stands for Wireless Home Digital Interface.
In short, it replaces the cable with an emitter and a receiver which communicate with each other wirelessly.
It has been developed and promoted by various manufacturers.
Currently, among our accessory manufacturers, VISION offers two products which are compatible with this standard. These are TC2-HDMIW7 and TC2-HDMIW20 and they differ in terms of the maximum transmission distance: the first has a maximum distance of 7 metres while the maximum distance of the second is 20 metres.
