This stage is about ‘doing’ – allowing children to handle physical objects and manipulate them. Every new concept is learnt with a concrete experience to begin with. The manipulatives should be varied as much as possible. Concrete materials should not be disregarded too quickly or seen as too childish for older children as they are important for building true conceptual understanding.

This stage is about ‘seeing’ – using pictures of objects to model problems. Pictures, diagrams and models help children to visualise a problem and make a connection between the physical and the abstract. They should have opportunities both to see representations in a variety of forms and be able to draw/make models of their own.

This stage is about ‘symbolising’ – using numbers and mathematical symbols (such as +, -, x, ÷, =) and should only be used once children have a good grasp of concrete and pictorial methods. The ideal is that children are able to make quick mental connections between the three phases and are able to draw on a variety of methods to suit each problem.
