2017 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the college that was to become LSBU’s Centre for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. We’ll be in touch with a ‘Save the Date’ soon, but in the meantime we’d love to hear your memories of the college. Please send your memories, thoughts and photos to alumni@lsbu.ac.uk or write to The Editor (see page 2 for details)

When these gentlemen (note the absence of ladies) gathered in 1947 to mark the establishment of the National College of Heating, Ventilation, Refrigeration and Fan Engineering, the world – and the University – was a very different place. Just two years post-War, the then Borough Polytechnic was still reeling from the Blitz, which had destroyed a third of the campus, while the battered UK economy was gearing up for recovery. The College was the first to offer advanced study in these emerging technologies, helping the engineers of the day develop their knowledge and advance industrial practice. So while much has changed in the past 70 years, that commitment to vocational education has stayed the same.
