pened to the public on December 16, MOTIONAGTE Dubai, together with the other parks at Dubai Parks and Resorts (DPR), namely

Legoland Dubai, Legoland Water Park, and Bollywood Parks Dubai, was the subject of a special visit last month by delegates on the IAAPA EMEA Winner Forum (see page 28). There they got to see one of the biggest theme park developments in the world, and by far the largest in the Middle East.

WhiteWater has been involved with developments at DPR since the early stages, delivering attractions to both Legoland and Legoland Water Park as well as Motiongate, where it was responsible for helping bring to life intellectual properties (IP) including The Smurfs and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Mike Rigby, WhiteWater’s Middle East vice-president,

says he remembers the first time he visited the site in 2013, when it was just a desert with a lonely Portacabin. What followed was four years of close collaboration with Motiongate management, the park designers and site teams to create some of the most heavily IP-based themed attractions in WhiteWater’s history.

Five zones of fun MOTIONGATE Dubai brings together the magic of the movies across five zones, dedicated to Hollywood heavyweights DreamWorks Animation, Columbia Pictures and Lionsgate, as well as Smurfs Village and Studio Central. WhiteWater has attractions in three of those zones.

As part of the Columbia Pictures themed area, WhiteWater Attractions installed its first ever River Raft Ride in the United Arab Emirates. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – River Expedition features 13 eight-seater inflatable rafts that set off to explore Swallow Falls where incredible new food/animal hybrid species lurk in lush jungle landscaping complete with waterfalls and other water features.

“It's an adrenaline yet story-filled attraction with lot of

interactives to make it enjoyable for all the family as they navigate a variety of twists, turns and rapids,” notes Rigby. “We are thrilled to bring this kind of ride to region for the very first time.” Located within Smurfs Village, Woodland Play Park is an outdoor play structure with an Adventure Trail featuring towering mushroom-capped houses. As with all WhiteWater Adventure Trails, it uses vertical space wisely, allowing kids to climb and play safely 32 feet (10m) above the ground – leaving useful space at ground level where parents can relax and watch while enjoying refreshments from the adjacent Smurfs-themed café; a clever way to boost food and beverage spend. WhiteWater designers and sculptors have also created some unique aqua experiences due to be unveiled soon in the DreamWorks Zone and inspired by the How to Train Your Dragon IP.

Flexible attraction portfolio “It has been an incredible project to support from the earliest design stages right through to opening and beyond,” reflects Rigby. “MOTIONGATE Dubai is a showcase for WhiteWater in the region and demonstrates how flexible our attractions portfolio is. I’m constantly amazed by the
