Technology plays an important role at the school and we always strive to ensure we give our students a state-of-the-art education as well as provide the latest technology for our teachers. Much of their time is spent marking so we were also keen to implement a digital solution to help support this.

Viktor Rydberg already implements a BYOD scheme. How did digital assessments fit in with this? As with the majority of secondary level schools in Sweden our students work predominantly on digital devices, in most cases provided by the student on a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) basis. With this being the case it seemed counterintuitive for our students to work all day on their own laptops and then switch to pen and

tradition this month and travels to Stockholm, to hear from Richard Walls, Director of Innovation and Technology at the Viktor Rydberg Schools Foundation, about their innovative scheme to transform the final bastion of analogue education and take their assessment process digital.


Tell us about your schools The Viktor Rydberg Schools Foundation runs five educational establishments in Stockholm, Sweden – two junior secondary and three senior secondary schools with pupils aged from 12 – 18. We currently have around 2,500 students and 200 teachers. Though Sweden doesn’t publish league tables the grade point average of our graduating classes shows that Viktor Rydberg students are among the highest performing in Sweden. Likewise at both junior and senior secondary level over 95% of students achieve the qualifications to move onto senior secondary level or to university.


Why did you decide to implement digital assessments? We’re proud at Viktor Rydberg to be considered a

paper when it came to exams. Young people aren’t used to working this way and can actually really struggle to handwrite a paper for two hours. They won’t work this way in future either so it really seemed time to move on from this outdated way of sitting assessments. It was really important that whatever platform


we went for was hardware independent and easy for students to download themselves on their own devices.


How did you decide on the solution? We reviewed a range of digital assessment solutions before deciding to go with DigiExam. Having a fully-secure solution was essential if we were to use the programme for high-stakes examinations and this was the only platform that allowed us to lock down the computer to prevent students accessing the internet or their own notes.
