New Roofing and Waterproofing Guide for schools and academies

I

KO PLC has released a new Roofing and Waterproofing Guide for schools and academies. Aimed at head teachers, facilities managers and local

education departments, it highlights the tell-tale signs of a failing roof, and includes guidelines on independent advice, design, installation, inspection and guarantees. Information on funding is also covered. Ashley Chivers, Director of IKO’s Specification Division, explains:

“Maintaining and improving roofs to ensure they are waterproof, energy efficient and secure helps protect one of a school’s most valuable assets – its buildings. Without regular inspection and maintenance, long-term problems such as water ingress can result in damage to the fabric of a building, with significant associated costs and hazards. Our new Guide covers everything schools and academies need to know, and addresses the questions they need to ask when selecting the right designs, contractors and products.”

H

arper Adams University in Shropshire has installed Aico’s 160e Series of mains powered Smoke Alarms into its student accommodation in a move

to increase levels of protection for students. Harper Adams University has more than 4,000 students, a large number of

whom live on campus in halls of residence and other properties, including semi-detached cottages. The University wanted to increase the level of protection, but without the

considerable expense of moving to an LD1 system which is the highest protection in Fire Alarm system categories. It also wanted a solution that was flexible as these properties may be repurposed in the future. The solution was found in the use of Aico’s Ei160e Series mains powered

alarms with 10-year rechargeable Lithium cell back-up with Ei164e Heat Alarms fitted in the kitchens and Ei166e Optical Alarms in the bedrooms. The scheme has been so successful that the University is now looking to extend it to other student and staff accommodation.

he risk of electrocution or fire in schools and universities can be reduced by a common-sense approach to PAT (Portable Appliance Testing)

inspections, partnering a respected company with technicians who are highly qualified and experienced in the specific demands of the education sector. Ross Maddock, operations director of Hawkesworth Appliance Testing, the

UK’s largest dedicated PAT Testing company, explained: “Fire or other accidents caused by defective or counterfeit electrical equipment can prove costly and disruptive. Ensuring pupil, student and staff safety is a primary consideration for schools, colleges, academies and universities and also a legal responsibility, and regular testing of portable electrical appliances should be a crucial part of any educational establishment’s code of practice.”
