Putting fire into commercial design

Dimplex’s Opti-myst at the Novotel in Canary Wharf, London W

hether it’s modern gas fires pushing the boundaries of interior design or electric fire installations allowing the convenience of a fuss-free smoke and flame effect all year round, there is an ever broadening

array of modern solutions. In recent years, the rising popularity of lifestyle trends such as mindfulness, the art of being present in the moment, and ‘hygge’, the Danish practice of living cosily, has only served to elevate the experience of curling up in front of the fire. Being mesmerised by the flames dancing across the hearth while listening to the sound of crackling logs is still regarded as the ultimate in relaxation during the winter months. With commercial interior design continually evolving, hotels, restaurants and

leisure facilities such as theatres and golf clubs on the lookout for the latest cutting-edge additions, are now recognising the impact that a visually striking fire centrepiece can have on visitors, and inevitably revenues.

Modern gas fire benefits

When it comes to gas fires in particular, the latest models have evolved to include more innovative features such as greater heat output, a host of installation choices and of course lower running costs through greater efficiency. Crucially, gas fires now offer greater design flexibility than ever before. For

instance, Faber, known for its premium, aspirational gas fires, now has the MatriX– which comes in a range of sizes and a number of optional extras, to create a high-end mesmerising centrepiece to any room. Another benefit is enhanced control over the flame. At full power the flames of the Step Burner can be seen across the full width of the gas fire and the intensity

20 December 2018 Electric alternative

Despite the benefits of gas, in a commercial setting the installation of gas fires can throw up a myriad health and safety concerns, whilst some fuels are also subject to restrictions on what you can burn. There is also the added challenge of what to do in the summer months, when demand for ambience must be balanced against the heat of a real flame. Thanks to the continued development of electric flame and smoke effects,

hotels, restaurants and other leisure facilities can create the illusion of fire in their lobby, bar or even bedrooms. There is no fuss, no safety concerns and no heat - so it can be used all year round, without creating overheated spaces which could inadvertently drive guests away. The Dimplex Opti-myst effect employs patented technology, creating one of the

most realistic 3D electric flame and smoke effects. An ultra-fine water mist is created using ultrasonic technology and as the vapour rises up through the log- effect fuel bed, the light reflects against the water, creating a convincing yet cool, illusion of flames and smoke. The result is an appearance that it is regularly mistaken for true flames and smoke. The innovative technology has been placed at the centre of the revamp of the Gentleman & Scholar tavern-style bistro pub at Hyatt Regency in Birmingham, as well as the Novotel Canary Wharf in London. In both cases, the Dimplex Opti-myst cassette creates a striking centrepiece and the only ongoing maintenance required is refilling the water tank now and again, although this can be plumbed in to ensure a constant water supply. As we enter the autumn months and with commercial fires representing such a huge growth area, it’s never been a more apt time for enterprising installers to boost their income stream by capitalising on the need for modern, efficient and beautiful fires.

Faber’s e-MatriX

Amid a growing trend for commercial spaces to create a warmer, welcoming and luxury ambience, the presence of a fire is key. Jonathan Smith, product marketing manager at Glen Dimplex Heating and Ventilation explains how the latest advances in commercial flame installations are driving opportunities for installers

of the fire can be controlled via a tablet, smartphone or remote control using an app – with the greater control leading to savings of up to 70%. Essentially, it means that when less heat is required, the fire concentrates in the middle of the burner whilst still giving the impression of an atmospheric burning fire. For those looking for a more traditional look, including pubs and hotel lobbies,

Valor’s ranges of inset gas fires include the addition of a flame safety device that cuts off the gas in the unlikely event that the pilot light becomes extinguished. And that’s not all; gas fires are now increasingly designed to make things easier for installers too, from optional extras like gather hoods to innovative burner assemblies and flue pipes which make servicing easier.
