COMPRESSORS
and low temperature applications with A2L refrigerants. Test have been held without any modification of the system configuration or the cabinet involved. Cabinets were delivered initially loaded with HFC and we’ve handled the tests with HFO, as drop in situation. An additional step in design of the system with A2L and full optimisation of the cabinet will bring additional savings and efficiency.
Blast Freezer
A blast freezer is a vital equipment of Hospitality Industry in preservation and Food processing. The effective function of this equipment is critical to the shelf life and quality (taste and texture) of the processed food. The temperature of the processed food is brought down rapidly from +65°C to +10°C, and +65°C to -18°C according to the application type. It is governed by EN17032 standard for performance and energy consumption.
These laboratory test results tabled above show almost no difference in the pull down time on this application. In addition, considering this non optimized scenario the power consumption per kg of frozen food is reduced by 3 to 5% with A2L refrigerants. The lower discharge temperature of
The above test was carried with a two piston 50 CC reciprocating compressor. Results have been measured as a ‘drop in’ situation and the system didn’t benefit from any improvement of any kind.
0.5°C to 6°C will enhance the reliability of the motor and compressor life in the application. Lessons from this test: no liquid refrigerant carry-over during the freezing cycle (SH > 0K) and no significant reduction of the ice production. The behaviour of the reciprocating compressor for the Ice production is similar with A2L refrigerants, even considering the specific period of harvesting cycle during which the liquid refrigerant comes back to the compressor. We can observe for the Ice machine application tested a marginal difference of power consumption.
Attention must be paid while selecting the compressor or components working with A2L refrigerants. Choosing mid-point selection for the right sizing of the heat exchangers, expansion devices and compressors for the application enables dealing with their glide. Servicing an application loaded with A2L refrigerant remains similar to what is currently valid, taking into account the A2L characteristics. Mildly flammable refrigerant (A2L) compressors need certified and trained personnel and must follow the guidelines given by the compressors and local / international standards that govern the safe installation practices.
Transition to A2L refrigerant is more than encouraging. According to their performances and classification they have shown their ability to address a significant part of the commercial refrigeration business. Key products announcement will be done in the coming weeks and months about compressors and condensing Units availability, working with A2L refrigerants.
