ENERGY SAVING EQUIPMENT

Energy labelling regulations The introduction of energy labelling regulations in 2021 has simplified the process of specifying and purchasing the most energy efficient refrigerated display equipment. All refrigeration equipment is required to display an energy label indicating an energy efficiency rating on a scale from ‘A’ to ‘G’, with ‘A’ being the most efficient. The label must also indicate an annual kWh energy consumption figure measured under industry test standards. The energy label data relating to refrigerated cabinets must be published on the websites, literature and technical documents of all equipment manufacturers and suppliers, making it readily available to end users and specifiers.

Spiralling electricity tariffs Whilst most responsible companies recognise the importance of limiting emissions and reducing their carbon footprint, it would be naïve to suggest that saving the planet is the only reason food retailers need to reduce energy consumption. The sustained increase in the cost of electricity has had a major impact the overheads of refrigeration users, placing a further squeeze on operating margins. Government price capping has been a welcome intervention, but it is for a limited period only. The end of the price cap, together with uncertainty over the continuity of fuel supply, as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine, will make further increases in utility costs almost inevitable in 2023 and beyond. The majority of conventional open front cabinets have an energy class rating of ‘E’ or ‘F’. Typical electricity tariffs rose from 28 pence to 41 pence per kWh during the second half of 2023 representing an increase of approximately 46.5%. In real numbers, this means that the annual cost of running a conventional 1250 mm open front refrigerated multi deck display rocketed by nearly £1,000 for an ‘E’ rated cabinet or by approximately £1,200 for an ‘F’ rated cabinet.

Delivering significant energy savings At Adande, we have adopted a revolutionary approach to retail refrigeration, the result of which is our new Bora open front multi deck cabinet powered by our unique and patented airflow management system, Aircell. The large capacity integral Bora 1250 mm model has been designed specifically for convenience and food- to-go retailing. Operating at a climate class of 3M1 (-1° C to +5 C at 25° C/60% RH), the Bora model with glass end walls has received a 2021 energy class label rating of ‘B’.

per kWh, this means that the potential annual energy savings of a Bora cabinet will be up to £2,454 when measured against a comparable and widely available ‘F’ rated cabinet with the same total display area. Cost savings will be considerably more when compared with older cabinet models. In stores with more than one unit or across chains with multiple stores, the price cost savings are eye watering. These substantial savings mean that the Bora model will provide a tangible return on investment in under two years. With further increases in electricity prices expected in the months ahead even greater cost savings will be achieved. Bora’s refrigeration machinery also uses a low global

The best of both worlds I have been in the refrigeration industry for many years and for as long as I can remember the climate change naysayers have been claiming that a significant reduction in emissions and the goal of carbon neutrality would be cost prohibitive. That is no longer the case as Adande is delivering an environmentally friendly refrigeration solution, which also offers dramatic cost savings for food retailers.
