STANDARD IMPROVEMENTS FOR AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY PROCESS AUDITS

Since its publication in 1998 the VDA Volume 6.3 has become a globally recognised standard for process audits in the automotive industry. The guideline, which was last

updated in 2010, will be issued in its third revised version early in 2017. Publication of the yellow volume was released by the VDA Quality Management Commission in July. A working group was tasked with

improving the standard for use in international contexts and to

FREE GUIDANCE ON OFFSHORE CHEMICAL REGISTRATION

The REACH Centre has published a guide to assist chemical suppliers and offshore operators who need to register their substances under the OSPAR Harmonised Mandatory Control System (HMCS) for the Use and Reduction of the Discharge of Offshore Chemicals. Companies intending to register their chemicals for use in offshore petroleum and gas activities in the North Sea are required to submit a Harmonised Offshore Chemical Notification Form (HOCNF) to notify chemical products which will include hazard data derived using test protocols approved by OSPAR Offshore Industry Committee (OIC) relating to toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation in the marine environment. Offshore chemicals are also subject to regulatory requirements other than OSPAR such as REACH and BPR. Containing definitions and processes, the guide gives an overview and helps affected companies to comply with the two different regulatory schemes. www.thereachcentre.com

simplify the audit process using experience gained in the past. It is hoped that the changes will lead to continued and increased global spread of the standard. Changes are being made in three main areas: • Revision of the questionnaire: A limit on the process specific points was imposed and standardised terminology has been used. • Objective: To ensure auditability and the verification and validation of results at the audit location. • Simplification of the valuation

methods and explanations of the existing valuation rules: The evaluation using the generic approach is no longer used. The calculation of intermediate results for the single elements to determine a weighted average result is implemented. All questions are weighted equally in the overall result. • The requirements and training concept for auditors have been defined. The yellow volume is available for download on the VDA QMC website

CONCERNS RAISED OVER SAFETY

EYEWEAR COMPLIANCE According to the results of recent research, undertaken by Specsavers Corporate Eyecare, nearly half of employers are concerned that staff are removing safety eyewear when it is not safe to do so. One of the main reasons for this

happening is believed to be lack of comfort or fit and dislike for the style of eyewear. Commenting on the results of the

survey, Jim Lythgow, director of strategic alliances at Specsavers

W

Corporate Eyecare, said: “It is paramount that safety eyewear is comfortable and properly fitting. There are various options for ensuring that safety eyewear is comfortable, including ensuring that the right size is available and selected in the first place, that the eyewear is expertly fitted, and that the design is appropriate for the individual.” The survey showed that just 25% of employers give employees an opportunity to try on safety eyewear before it is purchased. www.specsavers.co.uk/corporate/ safety-eyewear

hat a difference a few

months can make... Since the last issue, the UK has made the decision to leave the European Union. I am steering clear of commenting on what this might mean to industry as I am not sure that anyone really knows yet! Until Article 50 is triggered we can only assume it’s business as usual. So more about Brexit in later issues! Specifiers of PPE need to be aware

of the implications of new EU regulations so we take a look at PPE Regulation 2016/425 in this issue. (pg 14) We also take a look at the weakenesss of the CE mark on PPE. (pg 16) If you have a training responsibility you should also take a look at pg 8, which shows how 2 Sisters Food Group has addressed its training challenges through standardisation.
