MOTION CONTROL  PRODUCTS NEW FLEXIBLE ROBOT CONTROLLER

IMPROVE MOTION CONTROL PERFORMANCE OF ANY ETHERCAT-BASED AUTOMATION NETWORK

ACS Motion Control has launched a multi-axis motion controller that includes a high-speed EtherCAT-to-EtherCAT bridge to address the needs of highly demanding modern equipment. The SPiiPlusES combines ACS’ powerful motion controller capabilities with an external EtherCAT network master controller. The SPiiPlusES is used both as a node in any EtherCAT Automation Controller network, and controls up to 64 axes and thousands of I/O. Acting as an EtherCAT node, the SPiiPlusES supports the standard DS402 drive

Fanuc launched a new robot controller, which will facilitate the integration of automation and robotics processes, at this year’s Interpack in Germany. The controller, known as the J-30iB, uses core Fanuc robot technology to provide an easy-to-operate solution that can increase productivity and decrease downtime for manufacturers. The J-30iB is able to coordinate multiple machine axes operating simultaneously, helping to facilitate complex project engineering and servo axis positioning integration tasks. The controller’s flexibility means it can be

applied to any automation or robot integration requirements, while providing a consistently high level of precision and control. It is also compatible with existing software functions of Fanuc robots, including industrial field bus systems. Fanuc’s newest controller will be available in three standard configurations. It can also be configured for individual automation requirements. Thomas Schneider, product manager,

Material Handling and Vision at FANUC, said: “The J-30iB controller will help manufacturers improve their business agility and productivity due to its complete motion control and flexibility of application.”

protocol, as well as manufacturer specific commands. As an EtherCAT Master Controller, the SPiiPlusES also controls up to 64 fully synchronised axes with an EtherCAT cycle rate up to 5KHz. The network can be comprised of any ACS universal drive modules, NanoPWM drive modules, I/O modules, as well as third party EtherCAT modules. Any application that uses an EtherCAT automation controller, such as semiconductor processing, laser micro-machining, electronics manufacturing and digital printing, can benefit from the capabilities of ACS motion controller and drives to enhance accuracy and throughput.

EVALUATION KIT ENABLES DEVELOPMENT OF PRECISION-MEASUREMENT MOTION CONTROL SYSTEMS

RS Components (RS) has introduced a new evaluation kit from Sensitec, for the development of linear and angular measurement based motion-control systems. Sensitec has developed the kit for use in

potentially any application where motion is controlled via the measurement and detection of magnetic, electric or mechanical parameters such as angles, paths and positions. Targeting a range of markets including industrial

automation, automotive, aerospace, machine tooling and medical biosensors, the EBK7000 evaluation kit features Sensitec’s magnetoresistive (MR) sensor technology and enables users to gain experience with the technology, and learning about how different factors impact on the resolution of the measurement signal, such as the length of magnetic pole, pitch, and interpolation factor. The kit was developed as an extension board for an Arduino microcontroller system and enables

software adjustment of gain and interpolation factor. Analogue and digital sensor signals can be received and processed by the Arduino microcontroller. The Arduino plug-in kit uses two Wheatstone bridges, which are shifted against each other as part of the sensor technology to facilitate measurement of absolute angles of up to 360°, as well as absolute length.

PERFORMANCE, SUSTAINABILITY AND MAINTENANCE CAN ALL BENEFIT FROM NEW-GENERATION MOTION CONTROL SOLUTIONS

From adding smart capabilities and upgrading systems, to dealing with sustainability challenges and on-going maintenance, the products on offer from RS will provide answers to just about every motion control question and application. Technological offerings include products from motion control companies such as Festo, Danfoss, Omron, Phoenix Contact, Schneider Electric and ifm. One application that is gaining from a contemporary motion

control approach is conveying. Forming the main arterial link in multiple industries and applications, including production lines, packaging and filling machines, and warehouses and storage solutions, the upgrade of conveying solutions can offer immediate and tangible benefits in terms of throughput, energy usage and long-term service life. Upgrade options include the addition of newer,

more intelligent hardware, such as QUINT4 power supply units from Phoenix Contact. These use near-field communication to allow the upload of user-defined settings from a PC or laptop; plus there is an app for mobile and tablet devices. Users also configure QUINT4 to monitor DC current, power, or voltage in real-time via a 4-20mA analogue output. This intelligence, in a broader sense, can also improve access to the wider connected enterprise, using IoT-based solutions and

capabilities. Energy efficiency can be tackled through the use of higher- efficiency motors, such as the IE3 AC motor range from TECO Westinghouse, or the deployment of variable-speed drives/inverters to control motor output more intelligently. Products of note include the new VLT FC 280 from Danfoss, which can be easily retrofitted to replace the popular VLT 2800. From a maintenance standpoint, RS provides multiple products and services to support predictive maintenance regimens, such as electronic vibration sensors from ifm. These can be used to monitor motor and bearing vibrations in order to identify critical operating states before failures occur. RS has also extended its stock from Festo, with the addition of 400 new products on top of the initial 1,200 products launched in June 2016.

Engineers and technicians can access significant support and information

from the RS website, where the dedicated motion control section contains additional information and complementary products. Tutorials and articles are also available from the website’s DesignSpark section, and includes ‘how to increase efficiency in a motion control system’ and ‘motor efficiency and IE3’.
