CLUTCHES, BRAKES & COUPLINGS FEATURE SAFETY BRAKES MEET NEW EU ELEVATOR DIRECTIVE

As of 20th April, the new 2014/33/EU Directive came into force, replacing the 95/16/EC Directive. Within this, the Standards EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 have been developed to improve the safety of elevators in the EU, replacing EN 81-1 and EN 81-2 as of 1st September 2017. The new EN 81-20 standard refers to the specifications for the design of elevators and technical characteristics. EN 81-50 regulates how the inspection of elevators and individual components must be implemented, with one aspect placing further requirements on the prototype inspection of the braking equipment as part of the ascending car overspeed protection means (ACOP) and against unintended car movement (UCM).

According to mayr power transmission, it was the first manufacturer to provide safety brakes on the basis of this new standard, ensuring its elevator brakes fulfil the increased safety specifications contained in these latest standards. All mayr safety brakes are subject to careful quality controls. Therefore, prior

to delivery, all brakes are extensively tested on calibrated test stands and function-relevant values are documented. An electronic database in which the measurement values together with the associated serial numbers of a product are stored ensures 100% traceability in the process. The company’s brakes are designed so that they reliably achieve the

required nominal torque under all occurring operating conditions, irrespective of ambient temperature or humidity, for example. In addition, the brakes are equipped with a patented noise damping system. On noise-optimised designs, switching noises are practically non-existent and lie below 50 dB(A) (acoustic pressure level measurement) in new condition, the company explains.

Mayr www.mayr.com BRAKE MOTORS WITH A RANGE OF OPTIONS

Emerson Industrial Automation has introduced a new range of Leroy-Somer FFB brake motors. This has been developed around the ‘flexible concept’ which offers an extensive range of options associated with safety and variable speed as standard. With the latest generation IMfinity induction motor from Emerson, the FFB brake motor is designed to withstand the most severe stresses encountered in handling applications. The brake motor can be integrated in most fixed or variable speed applications quickly and easily. In

addition, its modular encoder adaptation principle makes it a versatile motor, suitable for the simplest to the most demanding variable speed applications. This new range, sized for dynamic braking, is based on failsafe

operation. The industrial control of its performance (running-in of all the friction parts as standard) and a wide range of braking function supervision accessories (opening, closing and wear sensor, etc.), significantly increase the safety of the transmission chain. FFB brake motors offer various different efficiency levels: non-IE, IE2 and IE3.

COUPLINGS FOR

MOBILE PLANT Delta flywheel couplings from Guardian Couplings are now available from Huco Dynatork. The range delivers smooth power transmission with reduced noise and vibration, for diesel driven hydrostatic machinery including forklifts, agricultural vehicles and off-highway plant equipment. The couplings are easy to install,

using a single-piece design which incorporates a hardened steel hub that is pre-assembled into a glass-fibre reinforced flange. The coupling attaches to the engine flywheel, taking advantage of elastomeric grommets that provide a steady dampening effect, protecting against normal engine vibrations and shock loading. While the couplings are suited to accurately aligned drives, they are able to accommodate the small angular, parallel and axial misalignments which are typical to piloted flange connections. They have been designed for long term reliability in demanding applications with the latest tier engines, and are able to transmit a nominal torque of up to 693Nm and a maximum torque of 1,730Nm. The hubs can be specified with a straight bore and keyway with set screw retention for straight pump shaft demands, or with a spline shaft connection. Of additional benefit, the

range has an operating temperature window ranging from 40˚C to 100˚C.
