Welcome, William!
A very big welcome to our new BKids diarist, William, who lives in Wrose, a suburb of Bradford, West Yorkshire.
William is 9, he will be 10 in July this year. He helps his father, Paul, to keep four colonies of bees on the family allotment. This will be William’s second year with his own bees, his special yellow painted hive was built to accommodate his first colony last year.
Last year William was helping with inspections, etc. But this year, for the first time, he will be doing things with his own colony all by himself.
Watch out for William’s first diary entry in the May issue!

hive. The queen is speeding up her laying and the colony is growing fast!
There is lots of pollen coming into the First drones
appear. The Beekeeper: Make your first complete inspection on
a warm and still day between 11am and 3pm. Look for:
- the queen (or eggs), - how many frames of brood?, - a good laying pattern? - any disease? - stores?
- queen cells? Add super if needed. Time needed: around 3 hours
