Maryland Will Miss... Catherine Lyles Duvall of Gambrills died
on July 23. She was 80. Duvall had a deep love of horses and had a career as an exercise rider, working with T oroughbreds at various Mary- land tracks. She earned a riding instructor cer- tifi cation from the Potomac Horse Center in 1969 and gave riding lessons to many in the Upper Marlboro area. Duvall was a longtime member of the Marlborough Hunt Club. She was also an avid reader and wrote poetry.
Harford Horse Show
Association rider Syd- ney Marie Rallo died on August 7. She was 21. Rallo was a Baltimore resident who graduated from Loch Raven High School. She was an Ed- ucation Development Center staff member and substitute teacher at St. Margaret School. Rallo also worked at a local supply store. She rode and competed with Hopeful Manor Farm on the local hunter/jumper circuit.

Ansley Smithwick was recently selected by the Oldfi elds Board of Trustees as the Head of School for the 2023-2024 calendar year. Smithwick has served Oldfi elds School for 40 years in just about every role. She began her career at Oldfi elds in 1980 as a French and history teacher, becoming the Foreign Language Department Chair in 1981. During Smithwick’s tenure at Oldfi elds she has held the positions of Director of Alumnae Aff airs and Communications, Director of Learning Support, Academic Dean, Associate Head of School, and Interim Head of School. Since June, Smithwick has been volunteering at the School, assisting with the transition to a new administration. Smithwick and her husband Patrick, an author and educator, raised their three children on the Oldfi elds campus, where they lived for 17 years. She and Patrick now live in Monkton on the family farm. Terry West has been named Chair of the Maryland Bred Race Fund Advisory Board. Emma Cary of
