Dolly von Stade Bostwick, Jr. Submitted by J.B. Secor Dolly von Stade Bostwick was an avid horse-
woman and a devoted mother. She passed on June 20 at her home in Indiantown, Florida, at the age of 66. Dolly was born in New York City to the famed amateur jockey, trainer and polo player G.H. “Pete” Bostwick and mother Dolly von Stade Bostwick. Dolly was a very successful rider of show
ponies in her early years and spent much of her childhood between Aiken, South Caro-
lina, and Long Island, New York. She was the apple of her father’s eye. As a matter of fact, Dolly could do no wrong in her father’s mind. I saw that first hand when I was down in Ai- ken, South Carolina, showing Bostwick ponies myself. I was only one year older than Dolly. She went on to the Foxcroft School but de- cided to go into horse racing instead of the institute that Foxcroft had to offer. Dolly once told the New York Times that she was a “jock- ey, not a debutante.” Dolly also had a keen eye for discovering
young horses and became quite successful at picking yearlings and running through two- year-olds in training sales. Her horseman- ship was respected by many and she rode and trained at many well-known race tracks all along the East Coast. Dolly has left us in her life yet her spirit and her legend will still be well remembered by all of us. She was from a different cut of cloth. Yet from the kind of cloth I most love. Dolly we will miss you.
