Pimlico and Laurel Park to be completed by 2025 however, no bonds have been sold by the State and neither project has broken ground. Gary McGuigan, Executive Vice President of the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) said at a State budget briefi ng on February 3, “I don’t have a detailed timeline. I will say the ear- liest that I see activity at either facility is most likely after the Preakness in 2023.” T e Maryland General Assembly passed a law in 2020 that ratifi ed a landmark agreement to keep the Preakness at Pimlico with MSA re- quired to issue up to $375 million in bonds to fi nance the project. Debt service will be paid off with lottery revenue and various state funds ded- icated to horse racing will reimburse the lottery.


Marylanders Win PA National Grants Each year, proceeds from the Pennsylvania


National Horse Show (PNHS), held each Oc- tober in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, allows the PNHS Foundation to make grants available to equine non-profi t organizations for charitable and educational purposes. From the 2021 show, grants were awarded to 31 organizations in- cluding four from Maryland. T e Maryland winners were Maryland Horse Council members Chesapeake T erapeutic Rid- ing (Abingdon), Days End Horse Farm Res- cue (Woodbine), and February Star Sanctuary (Knoxville), as well as Progressive Equestrian T erapeutic Services, Inc. (Upper Marlboro)


RRP Announces Trainers for 2022 TB Makeover


T e Retired Racehorse Project announced


on February 15 that this year’s T oroughbred Makeover and National Symposium will fea- ture 482 trainers. T e competition is set to run at the Kentucky Horse Park October 12-15.

Research Grants for Trauma Therapy through Horses


T e Horses and Humans Research Foun-


dation (HHRF) is requesting proposals for research projects that investigate the pos- sible eff ects horses have on humans who have experienced trauma with preference for underserved populations. All proposals will go through a four-tier


review process completed by the Scientifi c Advisory Council. Preference will be given to investigators with solid credentials and research experience. T e maximum award is $50,000 for up to 18 months worth of research. T e deadline to submit proposals is May

Nominations Open for Conserva- tion Award


Nominations are currently open for the


Maryland Leopold Conservation Award. T is award highlights farmers and forestland own- ers who go above and beyond in the care and management of natural resources. In Maryland, this award is presented by state partners Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment, Maryland Association of Conservation Districts and Maryland Farm Bureau Inc. T e award winner receives $10,000 and a fea- ture video about the farm’s conservation eff orts.

U.S. Polo Expands Collegiate Partnership


A total of 30 colleges, representing a record


48 collegiate teams, have signed up to partici- pate in the nationwide Collegiate Partnership Program through the U.S. Polo Association (USPA). T e teams include 28 women’s teams and 20 men’s teams. Sanctioned by USPA, collegiate polo teams


compete from September through April. T is year’s season will conclude with the 100th Anniversary of the National Championships.
