THE MARYLAND HORSE COUNCIL ONE COMMON BOND - THE HORSE • ONE COMMON VOICE - MARYLAND HORSE COUNCIL

MHC Executive Director Heads to Preakness

New Equiery Publisher Attends Her First Preakness by Carrie Hull

Do April showers really bring May (and June) fl owers? Well, in Ken-

tucky, Maryland, and New York, they certainly do! Roses, Black Eyed- Susan, and Carnations to be exact. I was extremely fortunate to attend my fi rst Preakness Stakes this year, just a mere three decades and just a (few) years after I was born at Baltimore’s own St. Agnes Hospital. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard about the famous port-a- john runs over the years, but I was very surprised by the kindness of every person I met over the week. We began the week at Mt.

T is MHC Executive Direc- tor came home with a beautiful signed (by jockey Ron Turcotte) photo of Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths and a pillow from Beyond the Wire. It was a lovely evening and I met one of my new favorite trainers Bev Hendry. Bev raced at Meydan most of the winter where my dear friend Mikey Adolphson, Media Manag- er for (Meydan/DRC) and International Turf Publicist and Journalist, works and lives. Mikey, like myself, is also a born and bred Marylander. He got to know Bev in Dubai this year. I must say Mr. Hendry most certainly makes an entrance. His nickname is the Hot Scot (Hot Scot Rac- ing out of Ocala) and he is often in a kilt

(as he was that very evening). It is always wonderful to track Maryland racing around the world through such unexpected connections!

Pimlico’s pink starting gate used on Black-Eyed Susan Day T e weather was perfect that week in Baltimore. Black-Eyed Susan Day

brought a bevy of women in extravagant hats, a fashion show deemed “Runway on the Rail” by Ella-Rue, a boutique in the tony Washington, DC, Georgetown neighborhood, and a pink starting gate! T e day, how- ever, was not without tragedy and we within the entire horse community support the continued work undertaken by our industry’s best minds to make the sport safer for both horse and jockey. T en, the day arrived. I can’t thank enough the entire team that puts this massive week together every year. Special thanks to Georganne Hale, Vice President of Racing Development for Maryland,

Jessica Hammond and

Chris Bricker of Beyond Wire (Chris is also a MHC Board Member), the entire team at Maryland Horse Breeder’s As- sociation, especially Executive Director Crickett Goodall and Jordyn Egan, and last but not least Maryland Horse Indus- try Board Marketing Specialist Anne Litz and Executive Director Ross Peddicord. quite shy. I am a brand-new publisher and certainly not the best photographer. She spent 10 minutes explaining the func- tions of this fancy camera to me in terms that I could understand immediately! If anyone does recognize her, I would love to print her name in next month’s edition. She did save me from extreme embar- rassment, as photography is not my forte! Not long after my quick lesson, I nearly
