Lawrence “Larry” Paul Kelly of Potomac died on April 23 at the age of 90. Kelly’s family was active in Pony Club and hunted with Goshen Hounds from time to time.


John Martin Ackerman of McHenry died on April 19 at the age of 77. Ackerman was known as the “Gate Guru” at local Quarter Horse shows and was also an avid horseman. He was a US Air Force veteran and a member of the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Company #30, where he served as Safety Offi cer for many years.


Kim Boniface of the Harford County T oroughbred racing and breed- ing family died on May 10 at the family’s Bonita Farm in Darlington. She was 51. Boniface graduated from John Carroll School in 1985 and was an accomplished horsewoman, successful trainer and champion amateur jockey. Boniface is one of two daughters of J. William Boniface, who bred and trained 1983 Preakness winner Deputed Testamony, the last Maryland-bred to win the Preakness Stakes. Kim Boniface trained horses with her brother Kevin Boniface and sister-in-law Chris Boni- face at Bonita Farm.


Foxhunter Leslie Barbara Happ of Mt. Airy died on April 10 at the age of 57. Happ was a former member and honorary whipper-in of Goshen Hounds before becoming a member of the Potomac Hunt Club. She and her husband Mark met in high school and were marred for 35 years at the time of her death.


Victoria Ann Hiett of Hagerstown died on April 29. She was 65. A graduate of North Hagerstown High School, Hiett served as a board director of St. Maria Goretti High School and also was a substitute teacher at Potomac Heights Elementary. She also worked for the U.S. Census Bureau until retiring in 2017. Hiett was a longtime board direc- tor of the Maryland State Quarter Horse Association and assisted with organizing the club’s horse shows. She was also involved with the Silver Star Saddle Club of Greencastle, PA.


Kenny Mills died on April 28 at the age of 80. He bred American Quarter Horses for over 20 years and showed in halter classes at Quar- ter Horse and Paint Horse shows throughout the country. Many of his homebreds went on to earn World Champion Quarter Horse and American Paint Horse national titles. One of his most famous halter horses was legendary sire Kids Classic Style. He also owned Golden Gunslinger. Many believe it was Kids Classic Style’s success as a halter horse and sire that led to the popularity of the buckskin color in Ameri- can Quarter Horses seen today.


Ursula Joan Ayd of Lothian died on May 1 at the age of 84. After retiring from Western Electric/AT&T, where she was one of the fi rst women to work in the male dominated fi eld, she and her husband Joe were introduced to Standardbred Harness racing through their son-in- law Jim. T ey quickly became big Standardbred supporters as owners, breeders and advocates of the Maryland Standardbred industry. Ayd was a member of the Maryland Horse Council and U.S. Trotting Associa- tion.


Charles Patrick “Chuck” Nutwell died on May 4 at the age of 47 as the result of a car accident in West Virginia. Nutwell was from Needmore, PA and was a member of the Maryland Draft Horse and Mule Associa- tion. He was a very talented horsepuller and blacksmith. Nutwell was involved in the horsepulling world from birth, as both sides of his fam- ily were avid supporters of the sport as well as of their horses. Nutwell and his brother Bill traveled around the area driving a six horse hitch at many events.
